Digitization - A core factor for further improvement of efficiency at shipyards

There are so much relevant data available in the ship yard computer systems (CAD, CAM, EPR, PDM) that could have speeded up the production work if they was available at the right time. But the big problem is that the planners preparing the job are facing to many systems, to many interfaces with different structures to be able to plan the work to a needed level, fast enough. The workers are facing a predefined set of drawings and lists, that shows some of the needed data which may be outdated at the time the information is used.

There is a huge potential in efficiency if the information from the computer systems could be made available in a structure that fits the work process in a easy manageable way. Where the ship is split into reasonable work packages, with only the relevant drawings and information’s directly available, including status from procurement, sub-suppliers, own prefabrication, logistics, and installation was incorporated in one simple interface.

This is not the situation today, even though some yards have done a lot in this direction, built into “small brand ERP systems” as “branch solutions”. But, suddenly the “small brands” are bought up by the big ones, and it seams that the “big brand ERP systems” don’t have enough attention to this industry’s branch needs. In the case of Cadmatic, they have done a great job to open up the systems with API, and provided e-Share as an open end easy platform to present information mentioned above, but the big question is how to access the “big brand ERP”, and how are they performing in providing reliable data from procurement, sub-suppliers, own production and accurate logistics.

Anyhow, CADMATIC with this great e-Share integration- and presentation solution is excellent for the few yards that have reliable and accessible data, at the right level and structure, available.
